A private family foundation awarded First Baptist Church of South Londonderry a matching grant for their sprinkler system in February. The church is continuing to rebuild after their previous building was destroyed by fire in 2010. For every $1 the church raised, the foundation would give the church $2 until the cost of the sprinkler system, which is approximately $80,000, was raised. While First Baptist Church had already raised $10,000 when they found out that they would be receiving the grant, it took less than one month to cover 1/3 of the cost that they needed in order to receive the grant. First Baptist Church has already started talking with the company who will be installing the system, and the company will most likely begin their work in the next few weeks!
First Baptist Church would like to thank the community for all their help in getting this matching grant funded so quickly. Any of the donations that exceed what is needed for the sprinkler system will be used for their heating and plumbing, which is their next step in rebuilding. It’s been a long journey, but funding this part of the building is a major step forward in reaching their goal of being able to worship in the new building. In order to be cost effective, First Baptist Church is now working directly with volunteers and construction workers to complete the the building project. They are continuing to raise funds for the added expense of meeting current commercial building codes including the sprinkler system. Donations towards the sprinkler system can be made online at firstbaptistlondonderryvt.org or mailed to First Baptist Church (PO Box 278 South Londonderry, VT 05155).
