First Baptist Church of South Londonderry is excited to announce our Ground Breaking Ceremony for our church building on June 8th at 3pm. It will be located at the site of the new building, 62 Crescent Street in South Londonderry, rain or shine. After the ceremony there will be refreshments at the Town Hall, just around the corner at 139 Middletown Road. Everyone is invited to join us for the ceremony and refreshments!
In August of 2010, the former church building was completely destroyed by a fire. This brick building stood on the hill for 176 years. While we have mourned and reminisced over the loss of our building, our church is strong and growing. We are very excited to be starting construction on the new building this summer. While we are and always will be the First Baptist Church, we envision our building as a community church. It is designed as a place for group meetings, community meals, and events. For more information about our church and our building project, please check our rebuilding page. At this point we have enough funds from insurance and donations to begin this building project; however, with the rising costs of building, we do not yet have enough to finish the project. We're planning on leaving sections of the building unfinished and delaying putting a steeple on the building. With your help, we can complete this building project! If you want to make a contribution or donation of labor and/or materials, you can send them to P.O. Box 278, South Londonderry, VT 05155, or you can donate online at our website. We are thrilled that 105 people came out to check us out last Sunday! The day, however, did not go as we expected. About a half an hour into our worship service, a fire was discovered two houses up the road from the Town Hall, where we meet for worship. The house was not lived in, and no one was hurt. Thankfully, we had a bunch of people who are on fire departments and the rescue squad who were able to respond quickly.
In an attempt to help the fire departments we decided to end the service early so that we could get out of the way. We had lots of muffins left from before the service, so we set up a table with them for the responders. We are so thankful for their service to the community, so it was the least we could do for them. Our pastor, Chris, challenged the congregation that if 125 people came, he'd get a mohawk, and if 150 people came, he'd dye it blue. We didn't quite meet the challenge, BUT it's been recommended that we include all the fire fighters in that number. We would make the 150 person challenge for sure! Chris has agreed to get his hair done after worship on May 25th. If you came and checked us out last Sunday, we would like to invite you to come check us out one more time. We promise that what happened last Sunday does not happen, pretty much ever. We don't want people to say church is boring, because we know it's not. That was not how we wanted to show that church is not boring, though! We appreciate that you all gave us a try, and we would love you to come back for another week! First Baptist Church of South Londonderry invites the community to check us out on Sunday, May 18th for our worship service. Everyone is always welcome to check us out, but we know that sometimes the first time can be intimidating. Once a year we try to make it easier by having a special “Check Us Out” Sunday. We'll explain each part of the worship service, and a lot of others will be checking us out, so you will not be singled out. We're all about growing followers of Jesus by planting seeds of faith and nurturing them to grow fruit.
Come join us for coffee and muffins at 9:30am, and for worship at 10:00am. The congregation is currently meeting at the Londonderry Town Hall (139 Middletown Road) for worship services. We give them to people in the community to share God's love with them. Here are a few shots of putting together this year's bags. The First Baptist Church is looking for donations to help pay for the cost of trash fees at the Londonderry Transfer Station. The SERVE volunteers have undertaken the task of cleaning up the Melendy property on the corner of Middletown Road and Crescent Street in South Londonderry. This summer marks the fifth one that First Baptist Church has hosted SERVE, and we are excited about how we are able to work together to help people and organizations in our area.
SERVE is a group of students and adults who have been coming to Londonderry from Hope Community Church in King of Prussia, PA to do community service projects in Londonderry and the surrounding communities. The first week this year they have 47 middle school students and adults here to work and the second week they have 61 high school students and adults. We encourage community members to drop by the different work sites and thank the students and adults, who have given up a week of their summer vacation. They have also been doing projects for people and organizations, including the West River Montessori School, The Collaborative, and the Second Congregational Church. At the July 15th Select Board meeting in Londonderry, it was voted not to waive the transfer fees for this cleaning project in South Londonderry. At this time they are keeping a running charge for us. We are asking for donations to help us out for this great cause. Any money left over after the transfer fee cost is paid, will be use for the planting of trees or shrubs around this property. We also would like to expand this fund into a yearly fund drive. It would be nice to enable SERVE (completely free) to clean up properties in Londonderry and the surrounding communities. They love serving our community in this way, and it benefits everyone. With your donations we can make this happen! Please send donations to: FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH PO BOX 278 SOUTH LONDONDERRY, VT 05155 “CLEANUP FUND” When the First Baptist Church received the plea for help in packing grocery bags for Sandy victims, they responded. Tim Desilets, leader of SERVE, the youth group from Hope Community Church in King of Prussia, PA, the group that comes to serve in Vermont every summer, called with a plea. Our pastors put out a call and within a few days FBC had responded. The congregation collected $390 to be sent to help pack grocery bags full of essential food. We may be a little church, but we have a big heart for service!
Christmas joy for children is the best kind of joy and the First Baptist Church of South Londonderry is spreading some of that Christmas joy. On Sunday, November 4th, the church members packed 20 boxes for children ages 2 to 6. Each box contains some needed essentials, as well as toys, markers, crayons, stickers, books, and things that will delight the young child. These boxes will be delivered all over the world to children who live in impoverished areas,
through Samaritan's Purse, an organization founded by Franklin Graham. We are so pleased to be able to bring joy to the life of 20 children and spread Jesus' love. |
